Defensive Registrations
Registered trademark owners may apply for a Defensive Registration even if they do not meet eligibility requirements for .cat.

Through a Defensive Registration, you can ensure that no one can register your name or that of your trademark. These domains will not resolve. To apply for a Defensive Registration, you will need to prove a priority right to the desired domain (i.e. a registered trademark).

Sunrise Period
The Sunrise period is designed to minimize cybersquatting in .cat. There will be three Sunrise phases:

• Stage I (from February 13 to April 21) Registration is reserved for institutions directly related to the promotion of Catalan culture and language: from schools to radio stations; from publishers to sports clubs; from cultural organizations to public administrations with responsability for territories where Catalan is the native tongue.

• Stage II (form February 20 to April 21) Reserved for any organizations with pre-existing online communications in Catalan such as a web sites, mailing lists, blogs, etc.

• Stage III (form February 20 to April 21) Reserved for the more than 68,000 people, organizations and companies who followed the campaign supporting the candidacy of the .cat domain.

Open Registration Period
Once the Sunrise period has ended, the open process will begin during which anyone who can demonstrate their relationship to the Catalan cultural and linguistic community on the Internet can register a .cat domain. Open registration will take place from April 23 onwards. EnCirca does not support open registrations.
